It’s been almost a year since this kiss occurred. Greatest birthday present ever.
Apex Protection Project — a mission and sanctuary for the wolf species.
My brother gave me this possibly and probably once in a lifetime experience to meet a wolf pack. Yes, a friggin’ wolf pack.
I joked (but was definitely serious) that I had always wanted be part of Moro’s pack in Princess Mononoke, but my fascination… obsession… attraction… trance… captivation… whatever it’s called… with wolves began as far back as memory serves.
Little did I know there was a wolf pack so close to me.
The Apex Protection Project is a non-profit organization created to “save the wolf species through education, rescue, and advocacy.” It’s a place where people can go and experience an intimate connection through spirit and knowledge and contact with this grander species (for an amazing portrayal, check out the guys from Yes Theory on youtube and their experience. They went back a few months later for a follow-up).
My brother signed us up for the sunrise experience — a hike with three of the wolves at 0530 and then a meet and greet with the members of the Apex pack. It’s a six person minimum for this experience, so he bought all six spots to make it very personal. Yes, I know. I am severely spoiled.
Co-founders Paula Ficara and Steve Wastell met us as we arrived and they couldn’t have been more welcoming. They told us their story and how the organization all began because of one wolf that changed their lives. They’ve been on an incredible journey and have created a safe haven for their pack.
I am blessed and grateful to have had this life/mind-changing experience. Thank you, big brother.
